Dear Colleagues, Vice Chancellor for Research Kathy Yelick and I would like to express our gratitude to the outgoing Faculty Directors of the Center for African Studies (CAS) and the Institute of Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies (ISEEES) within Global, International & Area Studies (GIAS) as they step down from their leadership roles this summer.

Center for African Studies (CAS)

Professor Hidetaka Hirota (Department of History) has been appointed the new interim co-director of the Canadian Studies Program, effective July 1, 2024.

Gia White, Administrative Director at Global, International & Area Studies and the Institute of European Studies, has been honored with the esteemed 2024 Walter A. Robinson Excellence in Service Award at the upcoming University of California’s Black Administrators’ Council (UCBAC) conference in early February 2024. This systemwide award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated consistent servant-leadership and a dedication to uplifting African American students, staff, or faculty with the UC system.

UC Berkeley History professor Christine Philliou has been awarded a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) for a 3-year research project to create a comprehensive, public-facing website to build new types of knowledge and raise public awareness about Istanbul and its constituent Orthodox Christian communit

More than $12 million in new federal grants will drive dramatic expansion of UC Berkeley programs focused on international and regional studies, with benefits for both students and scholars, campus leaders announced today.

The grants from the U.S. Department of Education will go to research centers and institutes specializing in the history, politics, economics, languages, cultures and societies of regions spanning the globe.

GIAS director Rosemary Joyce, an anthropology professor and social archaeologist who has served in several campus leadership positions during her 28 years at UC Berkeley, has received an honorary doctorate from Leiden University in the Netherlands for her “outstanding research into the ancient civilizations of Mesoamerica and Mexico,” according to an announcement from Leiden University’s doctorate board.

On July 1, 2021, the term of Prof. Jeroen Dewulf (Dept. of German) as founding director of GIAS came to an end. Dewulf will continue his work as director of the Institute of European Studies, a position he will now combine with that of Faculty Academic Director of Study Abroad. Dewulf will be succeeded as GIAS director by Prof. Rosemary Joyce (Dept. of Anthropology).
