Visualizing 19th & 20th-century Christian communities in Istanbul

Visualizing Local Christian Communities in Muslim Cosmopolitan Istanbul in the 19th and 20th Centuries
Directed by Professor Christine Philliou (Department of History), this project is part of Istanpolis, a collaboration that connects Berkeley's Modern Greek Studies, and Turkish and Ottoman Studies programs. Funded by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), this three year research project will create a public-facing website about Istanbul and its Orthodox Christian communities in the 19th and 20th centuries, with the goal of writing these communities that have been marginalized by nationalism back into the historical record of Europe and the Middle East.
